Darkly Dreaming Dexter
The novel's protagonist, Dexter Morgan, works for the Miami-Dade Police Department as a forensic blood spatter analyst. In his spare time, Dexter is a serial killer who kills murderers, rapists, and other undesirables he believes that the legal system has failed to stop.
My inspiration drew from the main character's focus on blood platter, but I also wanted to demonstrate the actual "monster" that is seen even on the day to day in the Police Department that no one is aware of.
Set in a future in which interstellar travel is facilitated by transferring consciousnesses between bodies ("sleeves"), it follows the attempt of Takeshi Kovacs, a former U.N. elite soldier turned private investigator, to investigate a rich man's death.
I focused on the bodies used in the story line, and how anyone can live in any body. The color scheme I chose represents the organic feel of humans with a hint of dirt and death.
The book reflects events leading up to the Russian Revolution of 1917 and then on into the Stalinist era of the Soviet Union.
I got inspiration from constructivist posters. It was a style or movement in which assorted mechanical objects are combined into abstract mobile structural forms. The movement originated in Russia in the 1920s and has influenced many aspects of modern architecture and design. I used this to give the feel of what the book is about, and focusing on the major characters.
